Schilthorn is a famous viewpoint in the Bernese Oberland, with a great view of some of the surrounding peaks. The Schilthorn is a famous tourist attraction in-part due to the 1969 movie of Her Majesty's Secret Service with main character James Bond. On the summit stands a rotating restaurant, one of 3 in Switzerland. The views from this vantage are some of the best in the Alps and that is that is the main attraction.
Nearing The Summit
There is a cable-lift from Lauterbrunnen/Steckelberg via Gimmelwald and Mürren which allows easy access all the way to the summit. Because of this, the summit is often crowded. Only a few people do actually hike the whole way up and down the mountain. Before the filming of the movie, the construction of the restaurant came to a grinding halt when the project ran out of money. The building was completed with assistance from the films budget. There are several tributes to the film inside the building. In the movie, Schilthorn is called Piz Gloria. This name has remained popular for people visiting the restaurant, but it is not the true name of the mountain.
From the Schilthorn you see: Wetterhorn, Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau, Äbeni Flue, Mittaghorn (Lauterbrunner), Grosshorn (Lauterbrunner), Breithorn (Lauterbrunner), Tschingelhorn, Gspaltenhorn, Bütlasse, and the Blümlisap Massive (Morgenhorn, Weisse Frau, and Blümlisalphorn).

It's not recommended to climb the last part to the top when it's wet, when you are not an experienced climber..

Via Interlaken and Lauterbrunnen towards Mürren (walk, cable or train). From Mürren you can go to the top via three routes:1. via Schreckhornhütte in the Engital

3. Via Rotstockhütte in the Sefinental

When To Climb
The restaurant at the top is open all year. Summer and autumn is the best period to climb. In winter and spring you can ski from the top towards Mürren.Camping

Untitled CommentThe cable railway is closed for maintenance in November. If conditions are favorable, this is therefore the best time to visit: Most likely you'll have the summit for yourself!
