Global Peak

Overview

Global Peak is an obsurce summit located between Windy Peak to the south and Black Velvet Peak to the north. Access to Global Peak is through Mud Springs Canyon, one of the least visited canyon in Red Rock Canyon. Very little exploration has ocurred in Mud Springs Canyon. To date there are only four published techinical climbs: Midnight Summer Scheme 5.7 Los Frijoles 5.8 Chuckawalla 21 5.9 The Sidewinder 5.7 The last two are on the north face of Global Peak. Though few have ventured in Mud Springs Canyon, it has the best waterafall in Red Rock Canyon. The upper falls require route finding, but well worth it.

Getting There

From the Las Vegas Strip head south and turn right (west) onto State Route 160 (Blue Diamond Highway). Drive 15.3 miles on 160 to an unmarked gravel road on the right. Turn right onto the gravel road. (If you pass mile marker 16, you’ve gone too far.) Drive 1.4 miles and turn left onto a gravel road. Drive 0.9 of a mile to a small pullout along the right side of the road. A high clearence vehicle is needed.

Red Tape

No red tape! No permits are needed.

Camping

Camping is not allowed in Mud Spring unless above 5,000 feet. You can camp at the 13 mile campground. From the intersection of 215 and Charleston Blvd. drive 3.3 miles and turn left onto Moenkopi Road. Camping is $10 per night. Note it's a pretty good drive from the campground to the trailhead. You can camp for free above the 5,000 foot level, though you need a back country permit. Call 515-5350 for permits.
